Island Peak, known locally as Imja Tse, is one of Nepal’s most recognizable trekking peaks and serves as a premier introduction to Himalayan mountaineering. Named “Island Peak” in 1953 by Eric Shipton for its appearance as a solitary island rising from a sea of ice when viewed from Dingboche, this peak attracts adventurers from around the world. Standing at 6,189 meters in the heart of Sagarmatha National Park, Island Peak is surrounded by some of the world’s highest mountains, including Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Baruntse, and Ama Dablam. Its approachable route and moderate technical challenges make it a popular choice for first-time Himalayan climbers as well as those seeking acclimatization before attempting higher peaks.
The expedition begins with a scenic flight to Lukla, followed by trekking through the legendary Everest Base Camp trail. Climbers pass through iconic Sherpa villages such as Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Dingboche, allowing gradual acclimatization while exploring the rich culture and stunning landscapes of the Khumbu region. Base Camp at 5,100 meters in the Imja Valley near Chhukung serves as the starting point for acclimatization and technical training, including essential rope skills under the guidance of experienced Sherpas.
High Camp at 5,600 meters is the launch point for the summit attempt. The final push involves ascending steep rocky slopes, traversing a glacier using crampons, ice axes, and ropes, and overcoming a headwall of fixed rope climbing approximately 100–120 meters to reach the narrow snow-covered summit ridge. While Island Peak is classified as a trekking peak, it requires basic mountaineering skills, making it an ideal training ground for future climbs of higher peaks such as Ama Dablam, Lhotse, or Everest.
Summit Solution Treks and Expedition provides comprehensive support throughout the journey. Our experienced Sherpa guides, many of whom are Everest veterans, offer one-on-one instruction and technical guidance. Safety-focused logistics, including acclimatization rotations, fixed ropes, and well-planned summit strategies, ensure a secure and well-prepared climb. The Island Peak Expedition is more than just a climb—it is a personal milestone and an immersion into the culture, landscapes, and challenges of the Himalaya.
